Do you charge anything to get started?

No. There is no initial fee, no implementation fee, and no charge for the first introductory call. Nothing is deducted from your capital before it's invested.

What is the fee cap and how does it work?

The advice fee is capped at £12,000 per year. So once your portfolio is large enough, the effective advice rate falls below your headline rate — and keeps falling as your portfolio grows. The cap exists so larger portfolios don't subsidise smaller ones.

How are you paid for the advice you give?

For investment and pension advice — the bulk of what we do — you pay us directly through the advice fee, and that's how we're paid. Some products, such as protection insurance (life cover and the like), may pay us a commission from the insurer rather than a separate fee. Whenever a commission applies, we'll tell you exactly what we'll receive, in writing, before you decide.

Is there a minimum portfolio size?

We work best with families who have around £500,000 or more in investable assets — pensions, ISAs, GIAs and the like, not including your home. If you're under that, we'll usually point you toward MoneyHelper or another suitable adviser rather than take on business we can't serve well.

Who will I actually deal with?

A named Chartered-standard planner who is personally responsible for your plan — every recommendation, every annual review, every phone call. Today that is Edmund Bailey, our founder. As the firm grows, any planner who joins works to the same standard and the same fee structure, and you'd always be introduced properly, never handed off. No call centre, no junior associate "managing" your relationship.

How often will we meet?

At least once a year for a formal review. More often where it matters — in the run-up to retirement, after a significant life event, or if you simply want to talk. There's no charge per meeting; it's all included in the ongoing fee.

Where do you meet clients?

We're based in Wokingham, Berkshire. We meet in our office, at your home, or by video — and, where appropriate, in a bookable meeting room near you. Whichever suits you best.

How does the introductory call work?

It's a 20-minute conversation, free. We'll ask about where you are, what you're looking for, and whether we're the right fit. If we're not, we'll say so and point you in the right direction.

Do you advise on transferring defined-benefit (final-salary) pensions?

Accepted Answer

No. We don't advise on transferring final-salary pensions out of their existing scheme. It's a high-risk, heavily-scrutinised area of advice where for most people the answer is "stay put" — and we'd rather be transparent that it's outside our scope than offer a service we're not the right firm to provide. If a transfer is something you want to actively explore, we'll point you to a firm that specialises in it. What we can do is build your existing final-salary pension into your overall plan and cashflow model — its income, its timing, its inflation-linking, any spouse's benefits, the complete package. You don't need to transfer the pension for it to enter into consideration.

Who is Tanners Wealth a good fit for?

We focus on three groups of clients: Planning for retirement — age 45–55, accumulating wealth, typically £500k–£800k invested. Getting ready to retire — age 56–60, 1–7 years from retirement, typically £700k–£1m. Already retired — age 61–80, drawing income, typically £700k–£1m.

How do you decide where my money goes?

We start from what your plan needs the money to do — when, for how long, with what tolerance for market fluctuations. From there we recommend the portfolio most likely to deliver that outcome, taking into account your risk profile, time horizon, cost preferences and any ethical exclusions. The specific holdings and the reasoning sit in your suitability report — you'll see every charge in pounds and pence before anything is implemented.

Do you offer ethical or ESG investing?

Yes. We capture your preferences as part of the fact-find. Where our core portfolios meet your needs, we use them. Where you have strict ethical exclusions (e.g. no fossil fuels, religious mandates), we'll research a bespoke solution.

What about my existing workplace pension?

Often the best answer is to leave it where it is — workplace pensions can have valuable features or employer matching that you'd lose by moving. We'll compare it against our proposition and tell you which is better.

How is my money kept safe?

Accepted Answer

Your assets are held on our chosen platform, in your name. We never take custody of your money, and the platform is FCA-regulated. If the platform or a fund manager were ever to fail, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme may cover you — currently up to £85,000 per institution. To be clear: the FSCS protects against a firm failing, not against investments falling in value.

Yes. Tanners Wealth Ltd is an appointed representative of Sense Network Ltd, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Tanners Wealth Ltd is entered on the FS Register (www.fca.org.uk/register) under reference 1062814. We write every advice report ourselves; Sense provides our compliance oversight, reviews our advice and gives us feedback.

Who is Sense Network, and why do you work with it?

There are two ways a financial planning firm can be authorised in the UK: directly by the Financial Conduct Authority, or as an appointed representative of a network — a larger FCA-authorised firm that takes regulatory responsibility for the advice its member firms give. Sense Network Ltd is our network. You can check its entry on the FCA Register. In practice, Sense reviews our client files and advice reports, supervises how we work and approves what we publish — including this website. It doesn't give advice to the public itself, and it doesn't choose your investments or set our fees: those decisions are ours, made for you. We chose this route deliberately. As a small firm, it means every recommendation we make is checked by a second, independent set of eyes, and we spend our time on your plan rather than on running a compliance department.

Does it make a difference to me that you are an appointed representative rather than directly authorised?

Your protections are the same. You can complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service, and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme applies, just as it would with a directly authorised firm. What changes is who checks our work: a directly authorised firm largely supervises itself, while our advice is also reviewed by Sense, which is accountable to the FCA for it.

Does being part of a network limit the advice you can give?

No. We are independent: Sense doesn't restrict the providers, platforms or products we can recommend. We consider the whole of the market and recommend what suits your circumstances — and if the right answer is to leave things as they are, we'll say so.
